Fraudulent exchange app Poloniex infiltrated Google Play again

Cryptocurrency users should be extra vigilant when downloading apps from Google play.

ESET security expert Lucas Stefanko discovered a suspicious application of the Poloniex exchange, the true purpose of which turned out to be theft of user data.

Stefanko notes that when he first stumbled upon the app, it was in the “bait stage,” meaning it redirected users to the real Poloniex site while its developers built up a reputation and a user base..

“As soon as hundreds / thousands of users start logging into Poloniex through it, they will remove the redirection and only display a phishing window for collecting data,” Stefanko explained..

This time, Google pretty quickly removed the malware from its app store.

“They removed it from the Play Store, after how I told them about it ", - Stefanko said.

Whether the attackers were able to implement their plan before the application was removed is unknown.

In January, Stefanko reported a malicious copy of the MyEtherWallet wallet that infiltrated Google Play, and in October last year a copy of the application of the same Poloniex exchange was revealed.
